Emilia: Hi, David. I haven’t seen you for ages. How are you? David: Oh, hi, Emilia. I’m fine, thank you. What about you? Emilia: Oh, I’ve had a session at the fitness center, so I’m exhausted. I must look horrible. David: Emilia, you’re always nice, even after a training session. Which fitness center do you attend? Emilia: It’s the new one in Market Street. It’s really good and it has modern equipment and a big swimming pool. I love swimming. David: So do I. I’ve heard that swimming pool is fantastic, but at the same time, going to the fitness center must cost a fortune. Season tickets are very costly, aren’t they? Emilia: Well, I go there in the morning or in the afternoon. The fitness center isn’t crowded at this time, and they offer a good discount on morning and afternoon sessions. I can’t say it’s expensive. David: Oh, I didn’t know that. Their location is very convenient for me, and I have mornings free. I must come and check the prices. Emilia: You can do it online, can’t you? David: I’m helpless with computers. I’d rather go there myself. Emilia: I understand you. I’m sometimes afraid to switch on my laptop. I’m always afraid that I can press the wrong key or break something. David: Don’t I know! Вut let’s go back to the topic of the fitness center, if you don’t mind. Emilia, do you go there alone? Emilia: I started going there alone, but now there are five of us. You see, the fitness center can be a great place to socialize and see your friends. Of course, your conversations should not interfere with your sessions. You shouldn’t talk or laugh loudly in the fitness center. You know? David: Actually, it’s not like I’m going to have company when I go to the gym. I find it difficult to talk with strangers. I’m not very sociable like you. You know? Emilia: We really love going to the fitness center all together. If we want to chat more, there’s a snack bar there, so we can have a proper chat there. David: This sounds like a perfect place. Ok, Amelia, maybe next time you go to the gym, you’ll see me. I think I’ll try this place. Emilia: It will be good to see you there. Bye for now. David: Bye.

A. A refrigerator is a machine for keeping things cold. It is sometimes called a fridge or an icebox. It normally maintains the temperature 4–5 degree Celsius for household use. The heat gets added to the air outside. The heat pump is usually driven by an electric motor.

D. One great example of smart engineering brings us to the Middle East. There, around the 4th century B.C., the Persians came up with what is known as yakhchäl. As the climate was very hot the Persians needed some way to cool off and store food during the summer months, and that’s when yakhchäls were found of great help. The word stands for «ice pit».
E. The history of artificial refrigeration began when Scottish professor William Cullen, who is famous for his scientific experiments in the early 18th, designed a small refrigerating machine in 1755. In 1805, American inventor Oliver Evans designed a refrigerator machine that ran on gas, although he never built one. In 1820, the British scientist Michael Faraday turned some gases into liquids by using high pressures and low temperatures.
