Hi, Bella! It’s Boris.

I’m happy that you want to visit Vladimir and meet me, your cousin, my parents, your aunt and uncle, and our grandparents who live here too. It’s a pity you don’t speak Russian, but it’s great that you like visiting the country where your mom was born.

Last time you visited Vladimir in winter and we visited some museums. The weather was cold. It is great that you will come in May this year when everything is green and the weather is warm and sunny. We can spend a lot of time outdoors.

We can walk around Pushkin Park. There is an observation deck to view Vladimir from a high point. We will visit the Patriarchal Garden, which is located on a high southern slope in the center of ancient Vladimir. According to legend, Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky started the garden in the 12th century, and he brought some cherry trees to the city. It is impossible to imagine Vladimir without cherry trees now. You will learn a lot of amazing things about this great city.

You will also try okroshka with kvas. It is a dish that’s a bit hard to explain if you’ve never had it. It’s a cold soup. Some people call it the meeting point between a soup and a salad. All that may sound odd, but when it’s hot outside, it tastes really great.

Elephants eat grasses, leaves, shrubs, fruits and roots depending on the season and their habitat. When it’s particularly dry, elephants will eat more woody parts of trees and shrubs like twigs, branches and barks. They need to eat up to 150 kg of food per day although half of this may leave the body undigested. Elephants eat so much that they can spend up to three-quarters of their day just eating.

Elephants communicate in a variety of ways – including sounds like trumpet calls (some sounds are too low for people to hear), body language, touch and scent. They can also communicate through seismic signals – sounds that create vibrations in the ground – which they may detect through their bones. They create these signals with their heavy footsteps.

Amazingly, elephant calves are able to stand within 20 minutes of being born. A one-hourold calf takes its first steps. After two days, they can keep up with the herd.

The elephant’s area of the brain which is responsible for memory is larger than that of people. Most scientists view the elephant as one of the world’s most intelligent animals. The elephant brain is the largest of any land mammal, it weighs 5 kg., Elephants show a wide variety of behaviour. They can learn, use tools, play, show that they are and do other things.

Human activities are also dangerous for the survival of wild elephants. Humans have destroyed many elephant habitats. With the loss of their lands, elephants may raid farms and villages to look for food and other resources. Humans also have killed many elephants for the ivory of their tusks. Some people carve this ivory into works of art, jewelry, and other objects. Today there are laws protecting elephants from hunters.
