Michael: Excuse me, do you have a moment to help me? Sophia: Of course. What’s the matter? Michael: I’m looking for the nearest bookstore. Can you guide me, please? Sophia: Certainly. There’s a fantastic shop not far from the restaurant Jolly, opposite the clothes shop just down the street. It’s called Page Turners. They have a great selection of novels and detective stories. Michael: That’s exactly what I need. Do you visit it often? Sophia: Yes, I do. It has a cozy atmosphere. It isn’t noisy there, and the shop assistants are really helpful. They even organize book readings on Thursdays and Fridays. They are exciting. Michael: That sounds like a place I would enjoy. I’m actually new in town. I arrived last week. Sophia: Welcome. Do you like the city? Michael: It’s amazing. I try to explore a new spot each day, but I keep getting lost. Sophia: That’s completely normal. Just remember, getting lost can lead you to unexpected discoveries. Michael: Great advice. I’ll keep that in mind. Are there any specific places you recommend to visit? Sophia: If you enjoy parks, you should visit Maple Park. It’s perfect for a walk or a picnic with friends. Michael: That sounds wonderful. I’ll plan to do that this weekend. Thank you for the recommendation. Sophia: You are welcome. Enjoy your time at the bookstore and have fun exploring the city. Michael: I will. Perhaps we’ll meet again. Sophia: You never know. Have a great day. Michael: You too.

Hello Nancy,
This is Nick. I hope you are having a great time with your parents in Sevastopol. This is my message about our project “Interesting places in Russia”. There is still a lot of time before we must finish it but I think we must start preparing it. I have found some information about Lake Jack London. I think this information is fascinating. In fact, Jack London is a famous American writer who has never been to Russia but there is some interesting information about a lake named after him. It is in the Magadan Region in the east of our country where the winter is very frosty while the highest temperature in summer is +12 °С. So this place is not popular with tourists. The most common legend about the origin of the name is that when geologists reached the lake, they found a volume of Jack London’s novel “Martin Eden” on its shores. Well, that sounds romantic, but not very realistic.
I have found some information about the novel too. The main character of the novel, Martin Eden, was a poor worker and sailor. London wrote the book in 1909, after he returned from Alaska, where he was trying to find some gold.
So, it seems that the writer and the lake have nothing in common. I don’t think that anybody had brought a book to the lake before the geologists got to this place.
However, this legend became very popular among local people, and now there is a fun local custom – people who are able to reach the lake leave a copy of “Martin Eden” on the shore of the lake, so that others who come here may find it. It seems to me that people who visit this place have heard about the legend. This way the legend has become alive.
А. Which sentence is true?
В. What can we learn about the location of the lake?
С. According to the legend …
D. The book “Martin Eden” was written …
E. People who are able to reach the lake …
