Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

During the dry season in the savanna, the only reliable place to find water is at a water hole. Thus, it can be a very busy place. Basically, a water hole is a pool or a depression in the ground in which water can collect. Animals visit a water hole frequently, especially elephants which have to drink about 200 litres of water a day. Oftentimes an animal leaves a water hole dirtier than ever. They try to cover themselves in the mud because it cools them down and it may also help them to get rid of nasty insects that usually infect the animal’s skin.

Sometimes larger animals are accompanied by small birds to a water hole. These birds hope to find insects on the animal’s skin. As well as insect control, such birds may also clean up any wounds the host animal may have. Thus, both host animals and birds are happy. In general, birds can often be seen wading in water holes, looking for fish and frogs.

You are considering joining the hockey club and now you’d like to get more information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask four direct questions to find out about the following:

Task 3. You are going to give an interview. You have to answer five questions. Give full answers to the questions (2–3 sentences).

Interviewer: Hello everybody! It’s Teenagers Round the World Channel. Our guest today is a teenager from Russia and we are going to discuss teenagers’ attitude to clothes. We’d like to know our guest’s point of view on this issue. Please answer five questions. So, let’s get started.

Interviewer: What style of clothes do you prefer?

1) I usually buy my clothes in shopping malls or online stores because it’s convenient.
2) I prefer casual and comfortable clothes like jeans and T-shirts.
3) Clothes are an important part of our image and can influence how other people perceive us.

Interviewer: Where do you buy most of your clothes? How often do you buy clothes for yourself?

1) Fashion trends change very quickly, and it can be difficult to keep up with all the new styles.
2) I buy most of my clothes in shopping centres. I shop for clothes every few months.
3) I think it’s important to choose good quality clothes that will last for a long time.

Interviewer: Why do you think teenagers often experiment with their clothes?

1) Many teenagers enjoy shopping for clothes with their friends at weekends.
2) Clothes can be quite expensive, so it’s important to choose them wisely.
3) Teens experiment with clothes to express themselves and find their style.

Interviewer: Is fashion important for you? Why or why not?

1) I enjoy looking at well-dressed people and noticing interesting combinations.
2) Fashion isn’t very important for me. Comfort matters more.
3) There are many fashion magazines showing what’s popular this season.

Interviewer: Has your taste in clothes changed over time?

1) Yes, my taste has changed. I now prefer simpler designs than before.
2) My parents sometimes give me clothes as presents.
3) It’s interesting to see how old fashion styles become popular again.

Interviewer: Thank you very much for your interview.

Task 4. Imagine that you and your friend are doing a school project “Volunteering”. You have found some photos to illustrate it but for technical reasons you cannot send them now. Leave a voice message to your friend explaining your choice of the photos and sharing some ideas about the project.

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

I think they are both very well-composed. The first one has good lighting and shows a nice group dynamic. The second one has a touching close-up that evokes empathy. Choosing the right visuals is key for any presentation. We should think about the color scheme and layout on the slides. Maybe we can use a clean, modern font to match the serious topic. I also think we need to find some statistics about volunteer numbers to make our project more factual. What do you think about the design part?

So, the pictures are about volunteering. One is people cleaning a river. The other is a lady with a dog. I think both are good. Volunteering is important. We should all do it sometimes. My opinion is that it's nice to help. That's all for now.

Hi Katya! I’m recording this because I can’t send the photos for our «Volunteering» project right now. I’ve chosen two pictures that show different kinds of volunteer work. The first photo shows a group of young people collecting rubbish on a riverbank. They are working as a team to improve the local environment. The second photo shows a volunteer at an animal shelter. She is wearing gloves and carefully checking or petting a dog in a kennel, showing care and attention.

These photos highlight two important areas. The advantage of environmental clean-ups is the immediate positive change you see in nature. The advantage of helping animals is the deep emotional satisfaction of comforting a creature in need.

Of course, there are challenges too. Outdoor clean-up can be tiring and messy. Working in a shelter can be sad if you see animals that are sick or abandoned.

Personally, I would prefer to volunteer with animals. I love dogs and cats, and I feel that helping them directly is something very meaningful. However, both types are incredibly valuable. Let's discuss how to structure our presentation around this comparison!
