Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

There is nothing fancy or expensive about happiness. On the contrary, happiness is simple and slow. It means choosing peace and quiet over excitement. It is wearing your old pyjamas and watching a movie the day before Christmas. It is sitting in your window watching the weather while sipping your favourite tea on a rainy day. It is looking into the bonfire surrounded by your friends and family while your bread is slowly baking.

Happiness is always about appreciating the simple pleasures in life and thus it can be achieved on a really low budget. You cannot buy the right atmosphere or a sense of togetherness. It’s all about time, interest and engagement in the people around you. Thus, happiness is an atmosphere which is not improved by spending more money on it, but rather, in some ways, the opposite. After all, the best things in life are absolutely free.

You are considering going to the mountains and now you’d like to get more information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask four direct questions to find out about the following:

1) duration of the tour;
2) price for one;
3) student discounts;
4) special equipment needed.

Task 3. You are going to give an interview. You have to answer five questions. Give full answers to the questions (2–3 sentences).

Interviewer: Hello everybody! It’s Teenagers Round the World Channel. Our guest today is a teenager from Russia and we are going to discuss teenagers’ attitude to local places of interest. We’d like to know our guest’s point of view on this issue. Please answer five questions. So, let’s get started.

Interviewer: What are some of the places of interest in your region? Why should a tourist see them?

1) Many people enjoy travelling to relax and see new places. It helps them experience different cultures.
2) The main attractions are the Kremlin and Red Square. They showcase our history and are truly impressive.
3) Preserving history is crucial for understanding our past and learning valuable lessons from it.

Interviewer: Is it important to preserve historical places? Why or why not?

1) I love our city park because it’s peaceful and green. It’s perfect for walks and meeting friends.
2) Yes, it’s very important. They are a link to our past and help us understand our culture and identity.
3) Future generations might be interested in high-tech museums and interactive science centres.

Interviewer: What is your favourite place in your home town? Why do you like it?

1) My favourite place is the embankment by the river. It has beautiful views, and I often go there to relax and think.
2) We could organise more school trips to museums and festivals. This would make local culture more accessible and fun.
3) Historical places attract many tourists from other countries every year. This is good for the local economy.

Interviewer: What sort of places will be interesting for people in the future? Why do you think so?

1) Interactive museums and eco-parks will likely be popular. People want engaging experiences and care more about nature.
2) Our region has a rich history with many ancient monuments. Tourists come to learn about our heritage.
3) I think every town should have a well-maintained central square. It becomes a natural gathering spot for people.

Interviewer: How can we make teenagers be more interested in local culture?

1) The city centre with its old architecture is always interesting to explore. You can discover something new every time.
2) It is vital to protect historical sites from damage and modern development. They are irreplaceable treasures.
3) We should use social media and create modern events around traditions. This makes local culture relevant and cool for teens.

Interviewer: Thank you very much for your interview.

Task 4. Imagine that you and your friend are doing a school project “Sports activities”. You have found some photos to illustrate it but for technical reasons you cannot send them now. Leave a voice message to your friend explaining your choice of the photos and sharing some ideas about the project.

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Hi Alex! I’m sending you this detailed voice message because I’m having technical issues with uploading the photos for our «Sports Activities» school project.

You know, when I was selecting these images, I spent a lot of time thinking about visual storytelling and how to capture the audience’s attention from the very first slide. The first photograph, depicting the young footballer, is particularly striking because of its use of motion blur and the intense focus on the athlete’s expression, which really conveys the dynamism and passion associated with team sports. The second image, showing the swimmer at the pool’s edge, offers a beautiful contrast with its calm, almost serene atmosphere and the interplay of light reflecting on the water’s surface, suggesting discipline and individual concentration.

For the structure of our presentation, I believe we should start with a powerful hook, perhaps a rhetorical question about the role of sports in modern life. Then, we can introduce these two images as case studies. I’ve been researching presentation software, and I think we could use some advanced features like smooth transitions between slides and maybe even embed a short, silent video clip in the background to create a more immersive experience. We also need to consider our target audience—our classmates and teacher—and tailor our language accordingly, avoiding too many technical terms about sports science.

What are your initial thoughts on this creative direction? Should we also allocate a slide for a Q&A session at the end?

Hi Alex! I’ve picked two photos for our «Sports Activities» project. One shows a guy playing football outside. The other shows a girl swimming in a pool. Both sports are very popular among young people. Sports are good for health because they keep you fit. They also help you make friends and learn teamwork. I think it’s important for everyone to do some kind of sport. We should encourage more people to be active. For the project, we can just show these pictures and talk a little about each sport. What do you think?

Hi Alex! I’m recording this as I can’t send the photos for our «Sports Activities» project right now. I’ve chosen two pictures that show very different sports. The first one captures a male footballer in mid-action, kicking a ball on a field, which represents team sports played outdoors. The second photo shows a young girl at the edge of a swimming pool, about to swim, representing an individual, water-based sport.

These activities offer different benefits. Football is excellent for building teamwork, strategic thinking, and overall stamina. Swimming is fantastic for full-body conditioning, is low-impact on joints, and can be very meditative.

However, they have their drawbacks too. Football carries a higher risk of injuries like sprains and requires a full team to play properly. Swimming requires access to a pool, can feel repetitive, and lacks the social team element during the activity itself.

Personally, I would prefer football. I enjoy the camaraderie, the competitive spirit, and the adrenaline of a team game. It feels more socially engaging to me. But both are excellent ways to stay healthy. Let’s discuss how to compare these points effectively in our presentation!
